Meet Korea through arts
I always visit an art gallery whenever I travel abroad. Looking at foreign arts and the process of learning them help me understand the culture and history of the place I am visiting. Ceramics were what I really wanted to see when I came to Korea. I decided to visit Seokbong Ceramic Museum located in Sokcho, after finding out that I will be able to see the humble beauty of Korean ceramics and experience making ceramic pieces myself.
Hop on a bus with KOREA TOUR CARD!
After taking the express bus for about three hours using the KOREA TOUR CARD from Dong Seoul Bus Terminal, I arrived at Sokcho Express Bus Terminal. From there, I took bus No.9-1 and got off at the "Sokcho Nonghyup" stop. After walking for a little while, I saw Seokbong Ceramic Museum.
Don't miss the benefits of the KOREA TOUR CARD!
Finally, at Seokbong Ceramics Museum! It's interesting to see the building that looks like an old European gallery has Korean letters on it. It is also partnered with the KOREA TOUR CARD, so you can get a 10 percent off discount if you present the card at the ticket box. If you get to visit here, make sure you don't miss the KOREA TOUR CARD benefits!
A new kind of art experience: Making ceramics using a spinning wheel
In the museum, there are a lot of interesting programs that visitors can experience, such as using spinning wheels, decorating, making your own mug, and more. I chose to try using a spinning wheel to make my own ceramics. I only saw people making pots in a movie using these kind of spinning wheels, so I was very excited to try it out myself. I wore an apron just like professionals, put clay on the wheel, and carefully formed the clay into a shape of a vase. It was interesting that I was able create my own ceramic.
Audio guide, the item that foreign tourists must use
After the ceramic experience, I went to go see the exhibits. One important tip! Seokbong Ceramic Museum offers audio guide in different languages for visitors. The art pieces are explained in 23 languages, including Korean, English, Chinese, and Japanese. If you plan to visit the museum, I recommend you use the audio guide. I also had a fun and convenient experience, thanks to the audio guide.
World's largest ceramic
Do you want to know what the world's largest ceramic plate is? You can see it with your eyes, in Seokbong Ceramics Museum. The plate that is exhibited on the 2nd floor of the International Gallery has a diameter of over 1 meter. They say that process of shaping and baking ceramics is very delicate, which is why it is so hard to make such a thin and large plate. This plate is even registered in the Guinness World Records! Isn't it amazing?
Learn the Korean history through ceramic art walls!
Some exhibits in the Sejong Gallery include the portrait of King Sejong and the ceramic art wall of Empress Myeongseong. King Sejong of Joseon Dynasty created Hangeul, who is also the most beloved and historic figures of Koreans. He is the one who appears on the KRW 10,000 bill. The milestones of these historic figures can be seen on ceramic art walls, so visitors can learn the Korean history while appreciating the artwork. When I thought of ceramics before, I only pictured bottles, vase, and plates; but thanks to this museum, I have a broader vision, now.
This is the end of Seokbong Ceramics Museum tour. It was a fun trip getting a discount with the KOREA TOUR CARD and actually making my own ceramics. If you want to learn the real beauty and history of Korean ceramics, why not visit Seokbong Ceramics Museum with a KOREA TOUR CARD?
